I too was looking for a high gain distortion pedal for prog metal (Dream Theater, Symphony X, etc), and since I can't justify a Mesa Boogie Mark V, i stumbled upon the Mesa Throttle Box. .Take one out and turn the other up slightly, turn the distortion on your amp up slightly. Use your eq pedal and set the range to favor higher levels for the upper register. Turn your mid knob (s) .
Trying to get a "metal" tone with distortion just results in lots of fizz. The Suhr Riot is remarkable, and it does amazing things even on a clean channel. Check it out.
