The drilling of a mud ring is easy enough, but how to mount a 1900 extension ring for the ceiling is the kicker. There is nothing to drill into on the buried box. The inside corners are slightly rounded and I can't get a drill bit to bite. Besides the current tab and single screw hole, the front side of the old box is squared and smooth. It's wise to LABEL them -- per the scheme -- so that, in the rush, the right box is used. Here and there, the box is upgraded to a 4-11. 1900 boxes are 1 5/‘8” deep, they wouldn’t fit unless you use deeper furring strips. I’ve seen Z channel for furring and they use solid insulation. The channel is metal, no warping or bugs to eat the wood. The down fall(if you use a 1900) is that the wall would have to be a little deeper causing problems with trim, cabinets etc. Instead of stubbing a 90 out at the top we put a 4" box and extension ring so it ended up flush above the ceiling, then we'd come back, add another ring and pipe them together or whatever. Sometimes you would end up with 4 or 5 rings stacked depending on how many wires and pipes there were. I never worried about it myself, but a customer idly asked a question in passing about whether the holes in the back of a 1900 box are a problem when it comes to containing any sparks or a fire inside. Just use a regular 1900. When you bring in the conduits pull the box square then tighten the set screws on the connectors. This holds it nice and straight. Plus the cover will assist some too. On big jobs we could not account for these fancy special made boxes. We made do with what we had. Cases of boxes and master bundles of conduit.
